Plant-Based Fabrics
Ancestral Whispers collection is sustainable, biodegradable and eco-friendly. All fabrics are made from plant fibers, such as flax, hemp and cork. Plant fibers are a renewable resource that is environmentally sustainable and very gentle to the skin, light, and breathable. The most important factors when designing, producing and buying clothes is making garments that are healthy to our bodies and our environment.
Some things to have into consideration when buying Plant fabrics is the process that they went through. From planting the seed until the raw natural materials are spun into threads that are then woven into natural fabrics. During this process it is important that no toxic chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, synthetic fertilisers, or any other harm has been done to the environment, animals and people involved in this process. Organic natural fabrics are natural, untreated, non-GMO seeds growing on healthy soil through crop rotation. It is also important that fabrics are botanically dyed using plants materials such as flowers, leaves, herbs, and roots.
This collection and future collections are dedicated on making garments that are soft, comfortable, breathable and in touch with Mother Nature
Cork Fabric
My Portuguese Heritage and Culture inspired me to use Cork Vegan Leather Fabric and celebrate this natural material in conjunction with my background influences.
Cork is a biodegradable, sustainable, eco-friendly material, it is durable, water resistant, hypoallergenic, anti-fungal, soft and comfortable. Cork is the bark of an oak tree and can be harvested every nine years for the lifetime of the tree. During the harvesting process trees are not cut down or damaged. The cells of the cork tree build layers round the trunk creating an outer protective coat made up of multiple thick layers as a result of this process.
Cork is one of the most characteristic natural products of Portugal and is part of everyday life: fashion accessories, clothing and shoes, furniture and floor or wall coatings, among others.
For my collection I choose to create tailoring and corset pieces made from Portuguese cork.
